Walking for Babies

PLYMOUTH – In 1938 the March of Dimes was born to help children who fell victim to the Polio plague and since then the March of Dimes aims to help save prematurely born babies and other endangered babies.

On Sunday, May 7, the Plymouth State University (PSU) Community Service Learning Center (CSLC) and the town of Plymouth will be hosting the fifth annual March of Dimes, WalkAmerica.

One in eight babies are born prematurely and 9 million babies are uninsured. Last year alone there were over three million people participating in the WalkAmerica to help those babies.

Plymouth is one of the newer walk sites and one of the most successful, thanks to past walkers. Well, it’s that time again and the CSLC is looking for more walkers.

People can form their own team, join one, or make it into a competition. Challenge other PSU offices / departments to see who ends up with the most walkers.

Registration for the event begins at 9 am at the Riverfront Park (by Plymouth District Court); the walk begins at 10 am. There is a one-mile fun walk or the more intensive three-mile walk. The event will begin with refreshments, music, and a stretching session. After the walk will be a door prize drawing.

On May 5, there will be the Pink & Blue Jeans for Babies Day, for those people that can’t make the walk.

People are encouraged to purchase a Pink & Blue Jeans pin for a minimum donation of $1 to the March of Dimes and wear their pink and blue denim to work that day!

Sponsorship forms, pins, March of Dimes beanie bears and storks are available at the CSLC office in the HUB. An informational table will also be set up in the Pawsway on Tuesday, May 2 and Thursday, May 4 from 11 am to 2 pm.
