Whether it be because you are stressed from schoolwork, aching from the flu, or sore from working off those New Year resolution calories, a visit to the Wellness Center may be in order. Located in the HUB, the Wellness Center is a free resource for students to improve and support their holistic health and well-being.
In stressful situations, it can be a good idea to refresh yourself and head to a free session at the Wellness Center. Get out of your mid-semester rut and take a trip past the radio station in the HUB where you will find a monthly calendar full of available therapy sessions. All you have to do is choose which therapy is right for you, remember the date, and go in to make an appointment for your session of choice.
Upon arriving to the scheduled session, you will be wafted with an immense aroma of lavender, jojoba, and other relaxing oils, instantly calming your nerves, and stress levels. A front desk attendant such as Rachel Buckley or Roy Power will be there to greet you. Buckley mentioned, “There are treatments every week that normally rotate between acupressure, massage, and reiki.”
These sessions can only be scheduled with the front desk attendants the morning of the appointment either by calling or coming into the center, so make sure to get there by opening time at 9 am to sign up.
While waiting for your session to begin there are holistic books to read, a comfortable couch to sit down on, or free condoms for the taking. The Wellness Center is not only a place of holistic healing but a place that supports healthy living as well. Students can learn about sex education through the Wellness Center either by reading the monthly stall street journals or attending sponsored events like Sex Bingo with PACE on April 26th in Prospect Dining Hall.
“This event will be all about having a healthy sex life. We will have hundreds of prizes for you and that special someone.” says co-sponsoring coordinator from PACE, Chelsea Davis.
The Wellness Center also houses a vitamin D lamp, which can be used by students when the therapy room is out of use. Power suggests to, “Come in with a friend, spread out some pillows, turn on the lamp and soak up the artificial sun.” The lamp and the comfort of the Wellness Center will surely alleviate the stress of the semester.
Once Regina Burt, NMT certified massage therapist, has a clean room ready she welcomes you into a “warm, dimly light, and quiet” room, according to senior Amy Mulhern. After undressing to the calming Hindu music it is time to lay down on the table and wait for Burt to arrive and relieve all of your tension.
Mulhern stated, “Regina came in and started to massage Jojoba oil onto my back and arms and slowly relieved the tension that had been building up all semester. With each rub I could feel the knots slipping out of my body.”
“Shanti, Peace, shanti, peace, and Namaste.” Regina will whisper gently into your ear once the massage is over in a very fulfilling twenty minutes. Going into the Wellness Center is certainly something to look forward to if you’re bogged down by Spring ’13 or Winter ’12, for that matter.
