Mount Ida comes from behind to defeat PSU Men’s Lacrosse

NEWTON, Mass. – The Mount Ida College men’s lacrosse team outscored Plymouth State University 5-1 in the fourth quarter Sunday afternoon to secure a dramatic 13-10 non-conference victory at the Mount Ida Athletic Stadium.

Sophomore Jonathan Lightbown (Melrose, Mass.) tallied six goals to pace the Mustangs, who won for the sixth time in seven outings to improve to 6-2 overall. PSU dropped to 2-5.

After Mount Ida jumped out to a 3-1 advantage after one quarter, the Panthers responded with three power play goals over the first three minutes of the second period to take the lead. PSU went on to outscore Mount Ida 5-3 in the stanza and the teams entered the intermission in a 6-6 deadlock.

PSU opened up the second half with three-consecutive markers, but the Mustangs answered with two goals to cut the deficit to 9-8 heading into the fourth quarter. Mount Ida scored the first two of the final frame to go up by one, but PSU tied it at 10-10 with 10:28 left in regulation.

From there it was all Mount Ida. Freshman Chris Prophete (Waltham, Mass.) found the net for the game-winner with 6:53 on the clock, and the hosts added two more insurance goals down the stretch at 4:01 and 0:51 to ice things.

Joining Lightbown and Prophete in the scoring column for the Mustangs were senior Matt Ramieor (Arlington, Mass.) with three goals, and one each from sophomores Alex Champagne (East Greenwich, R.I.) and Anthony DiMaio (Feeding Hills, Mass.) and freshman Leo Shidler (Peabody, Mass.)

Senior Matt Fontenault (North Kingstown, R.I.) led the Panther scorers with a career-high four goals, while sophomore Adam Krinsky (Concord, N.H.) contributed a goal and four assists. Senior Bobby Dabrieo (Woburn, Mass.) netted three goals, all in the second period, and senior Jon Gagnon (New Bedford, Mass.) and junior Kyle McKay (Longmeadow, Mass.) chipped in with one goal each.

Junior goaltender Kyle Bowler (Glastonbury, Conn.) claimed the victory for Mount Ida with a seven-save performance. Panther junior Steve Valeri (Chelmsford, Mass.) suffered the loss despite stopping 19 shots.

Mount Ida returns to action on Wednesday when it visits the Maine Maritime Academy for a North Atlantic Conference clash (3:00 p.m.) PSU plays its eighth straight game away from Plymouth on Wednesday with a Little East Conference game at Southern Maine (3:30 p.m.)
