Gear Up for Outdoor Adventures Day

On Saturday, April 27, the Plymouth State College Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (HPER) Club will host the third annual Outdoor Adventures Day. The free event, designed as a community service project for HPER majors, allows for elementary students in grades 4 through 7 to enjoy a day of adventure and fun. The event will include canoeing on Loon Lake, in Lincoln, N.H. and skill building on the PSC Ropes Course. According to Bob Benincasa, Vice President of the HPER Club, “It’s a day of fun and excitement for students, and it makes a good connection between the school (PSC) and the community.”

HPER majors need a total forty-five hours of community service before graduating. The HPER Department includes the HPER Club, the Teaching for Understanding (TFU) Club, the Athletic Trainers Club, and the ROCK Club. Benincasa expects about twenty to twenty-five student volunteers from within the department. “Other interested volunteers are more than welcome to come and offer their time,” he stated.

Benincasa has been hard at work publicizing for this year’s event. “I have been hanging fliers all over the community, and I’ve contacted all six schools in SAU#16.” Along with the fliers, local television Channel 3 will advertise the Outdoor Adventures Day, as well as the Penny Saver, and a public service announcement on WPNH.

Vans and canoes have been reserved, and the club will provide food and drinks for the kids. He stresses the fact that the canoe trip has limited space and those interested in the trip should sign up early. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. at the PE Center. Benincasa also explains that ropes course will have, “certified technicians to make sure harnesses are set up correctly and proper procedures are followed.”

“This is a great opportunity for the youngsters to experience the things we college students do,” he explained. “It allows them to explore elements, conquer heights and find things about themselves that they may not have know existed.” All the kids need are sneakers and a positive attitude.
