If it’s an evil woman got you down, a lost love, an empty bottle of booze, or the complete opposite of all those things, then it’s the blues; and if it’s the blues, it’s going to stir up your inner longing for something you never lost, or for something you have. If you’re a blues fan, someone who enjoys the velvety voice of a crooning broken hearted man, or who likes to drink a cold one while listening to a steady bass line, you’re going want to try to catch The Dane Rand Project.
Singer/songwriter Dane Rand, 26 of North Woodstock, New Hampshire is an accomplished musician. Rand, who started out playing drums and touring with Manchester based metal band Porphyria for 5 years, has progressed with a sound that is reminiscent of David Bowie melding with lyrics which echo Tom Waits. He moved on to produce his first solo album I Am The Rain in 2008 and has recently finished recording on his second album, Summer Love, released through MoJo Records out of Littleton, New Hampshire. Rand spent his free time in between writing and laying down tracks combining a series of masterful musicians into an improvisational blues trio.
The Dane Rand Project first played at CJ’S Sports Bar and Grille in Lincoln, New Hampshire on St. Patrick’s Day of this past March, instantly booking another four shows at the venue. What intrigued listeners was not only the wild percussion solos, or the classic tunes but the shifting exchange of musicians that came to the stage at each show.
Matt Smart, lead guitarist and front man for NC Blues Co, has been a staple in the DRP, bringing an energy to the performance and talent that is worth the admiration of any music lover. Bassists that DRP have performed with include; Gil Rand of Arthur James and Northbound, various Granite State Blues Society Challenge winners and Don Savigano of NC Blues Co.
Regardless of who joins them on stage, the DRP always perform as a trio and never practice together. It is the ultimate in live performance, linking three different styles together for either an intimate blues performance or a raucous night of high energy classics capturing an upbeat sound. They have covered classics ranging from the Allman Brothers Band to Howlin’ Wolf, and audience members don’t complain over repeat playlists since each show is completely different and takes into account the energy of the crowd
At the end of the night, the shows generally close with a solid rocking set and peter out with a memorable rendition of a familiar piece; most recently at Shooter’s in Laconia it was Hendrix’s “Little Wing”. So if you are a music lover, enjoy live performances and are interested in spending a night with friends listening to a series of accomplished local musicians, it’s worth the while to check out The Dane Rand Project.
