Lady Panthers Trample Bobcats

Plymouth, N.H.–Plymouth State University defeated Bates College Bobcats 5-4, in a classic field hockey game Sunday morning at Arold Field. Junior Lilly Silva and sophomore Christina Farias each had two goals on the day as Plymouth improves to 4-1 on the year. It was a typical fall afternoon as the Panthers took control of the game early as Silva and Farias scored back-to-back goals in the first half. Silva’s goal bounced past the goalie and drifted into the net as the Bates defenders could only watch it go by. Bates answered back as sophomore Liz Greenwood scored with fifteen minutes left in the half but Plymouth Sate came right back with goals by junior Amanda Gutowski and Farias. The Panthers had a strong defensive hold of the game as the first half came to a close with the Panthers leading 4-1. As the second half started, the Bobcats came out with a new energy and scored two fast goals. The panther defense looked a little a shaky but pulled off a good effort to keep the Bobcats back. Plymouth State then scored once again compliments of Silva’s second goal; their lead was back up to two goals. Bates answered back with another goal by Greenwood, but it was too late as the Panthers scored the final goal of the game with little time remaining. The Panthers first half play kept them in the game. Bates made it a close game in the second half, but Plymouth held on for the win in dramatic fashion. Silva and Farias stepped it up to lead the Panthers, but they weren’t the only stars of the game. The play of the defense was solid and the offensive attack was unstoppable throughout the course of the game.
