This past Friday, April 22, Plymouth State University welcomed MOMIX to Hanaway Stage at Silver Cultural Arts Center. The group of internationally known, talented performers captivated the audience with their incredible strength and grace through dance and acrobatics. Each piece consisted of brilliant music selections and lighting designs under the direction of Moses Pendleton. Whether it was swinging from the rafters or dancing with fire, the company members made everything appear effortless. The multimedia production started the show, “Opus Cactus,” with a fabulous female soloist performing a piece entitled “Sonoran: But Not Asleep.” While swinging from a suspended bungee hammock, the soloist was able to bring humor into the performance while twisting and flipping fifteen feet in the air. From there the show went on to introduce props into the pieces. One number even used twisted aluminum piping for the dancers to flip and hang on while winding across the stage. The costumes were just as elaborate as the work put into each number. Each piece was artistically choreographed to incorporate the desert life and animals, creating a most interesting feel for the evening. Concluding the performance, an informal discussion was held with the artists where members of the audience were able to ask questions about the show and the dancers. MOMIX has been part of many projects throughout the world. It has helped open the door for creative minds for the past 20 years and continues to do so today. Its cast and members put on a fantastic performance last Friday, leaving the audience wanting more.
