Plymouth N.H. – Saturday the Plymouth State Women’s Rugby Club improved their record to 3-0 after defeating WPI (Worcester Polytechnic Institute) 78-0. Once again Plymouth came to the pitch ready to play. Two seconds into the game Beth Metts scored off of a lineout and Meaghan Callahan kicked the extra points to give Plymouth an early lead. The try set the tone for the thirteen others to follow. Before the half was over Jamie Howard ran the ball into the try zone off a lineout three times. Amanda LeBrie and Hilary Scheer scored their first trys ever for PSU. While Kori Armiento and Ashley Daniels also crept across the line to in increase the lead. Callahan made three more conversions which left the score 48-0 at the half. All of this scoring was made possible by the never-ending aggression of the scrummies who kept hitting WPI hard, keeping them on their heels. WPI’s scrummies kept collapsing in the scrum-downs due to Plymouth’s superior strength. Time and time again WPI would go to a ruck with the ball and Plymouth would come out with it. The lineouts were straight and the drives were impressive. Going into the second half, the line-up started to change on both sides. Some people tried new positions while other people came into the game for the first time. These changes did little to hamper Plymouth’s scoring frenzy from the first half. Two minutes into the second half Metts started the scoring off again with a pass from Callahan’s fifty yard dash. Howard was soon to follow with her fourth try of the game. Armiento and Marisha Gentile showed the crowd what rugby was all about as they slipped by the defense and into the try zone. Then off a spin out, Meg Kennedy raced her way down the field towards her first try ever, while Megan Moran scored the final try of the game to leave the score 78-0. The backs had a strong showing throughout the whole game. The passes were crisp and the feet were swift as the minutes ticked by. It was nice to see new faces in the line who easily adjusted to WPI’s style of play. No one was afraid to take the ball or pass it out when they ran into trouble. Everybody played well but there is still room for improvement. The team is gearing up for a run at the National Championship where every little detail counts. This Saturday 16 the Ruggers are playing Middlebury College at 11 o’clock, so come and support the team.
