Forget the Bambino, Plymouth’s Curse Lifted

Currier field, Plymouth,NH- The PSU football team accomplished something it had not done in three years- won a game. They beat the Husson Eagles 33-21, in front of the home crowd at Currier field. The Panthers had a 26 game losing streak coming in to the game, with its last win coming against WPI, Nov 10, 2001. The Panther offense scored a season high, more than twice the amount of the previous high. The offense was able to do this while starting in their own territory on many of their possessions. The defense played tough throughout the game, stopping several big Eagle drives. Sophomore Captain Dan Fallon was all over the place making big plays for the defense, just like he has all season long. The offense got the scoring going early in the first quarter when quarterback Tye Seastedt threw a 31 yard pass to Brad Largy. Carlo Sementill kicked the extra point to put the Panthers up 7-0. With only 27 seconds on the clock in the first, Seastedt broke through the Husson defense and ran the ball an amazing 73 yards for a touchdown. The Eagles were not ready to give up. They answered back in the second quarter when running back Mike Prentiss ran the ball in for the score. Then the Panther special teams came in big. When Husson was attempting the extra point, the Panthers swarmed in and blocked it. Freshman Melvin Predue then proceeded to run it all the way back for a safety. The huge play put the home team up 16-6. Plymouth was far from finished scoring, and halfway through the second quarter Jeff Mack ran the ball in from 5 yards out. Then with no time remaining in the half, Sementill kicked a field goal from 21 yards away to bring the score to 26-6 Panthers, going into the half. Husson scored the only points in the third quarter when Prentiss struck again and ran it in from 9 yards out. The Eagles then successfully completed the 2 point conversion. At the end of the third the score was 26-14. The Panthers answered back in the fourth, when Seastedt connected with Largy again for a touchdown, this time from 49 yards out. The Eagles came back and scored a touchdown of their own when Prentiss scored his third rushing touchdown of the day, this time from 12 yards. The Panther defense was able to hold onto the game for the huge victory. After the clock ran out the team crowded around second year head coach Paul Castonia and celebrated the victory. When asked how he felt about the victory Castonia said “It feels great, like an 800 pound gorilla off our back.” He went on to say “It was a whole group effort. The defense was very consistent.” The Panther head coach did praise Husson “They are only a second year program, their running back [Prentiss] is very good, and they don’t give up big plays.”The victory brought the Panther record to 1-6. Next week on October 30, the Panthers have their last home game of the season at Currier field against Buffalo State (2-5) at 12:00 pm. Then they travel to Mount Ida (4-2) November 6 for the season finale at 1:00 pm.
