Plymouth, NH-It was a beautiful October day as the Plymouth State University field hockey team defeated New England College, 3-1 in a non-conference match up this past Tuesday afternoon at home. The Panthers were riding a five-game winning streak coming into this contest. The first half started out at a good pace, as the Plymouth defense played well, led by senior co-captain Annie Metz. The Panther offense found its spark halfway through the half as they attacked on every opportunity they had, making good passes right in front of the net. The NEC defense however, made a stand as sophomore goalkeeper Jacui Parker made several excellent saves anchoring the Pilgrim defensive effort. The Pilgrims began to mount an offensive attack as sophomore Brittney Vogrin scored the first goal of the game. The play got faster as the half was coming to an end, and the Pilgrim defense continued to play strong as Parker kept the Panther shooters under wraps. Plymouth revived their offense as they got some late shots on net, and junior Morgan Butters scored the Panthers first goal of the game knotting the score at a goal apiece. The Panthers came out strong and fast in the second half as they scored two quick goals within a minute of each other. Sophomore Melanie Bates scored the first goal of the half on a beautiful assist from junior Lilly Silva, who continued to play solid for the Panthers. The PSU offense began to roll as Silva scored her twentieth goal of the season and the Panthers then led 3-1. Both teams displayed good defense throughout the rest of the game as both goalkeepers recorded some good saves in net. In the end, the Panthers held on to win and boosted their record to 12-3 overall. The Panthers recent play is cause for excitement, as they stand in second place in the Little East Conference with one more conference match up left on the season.
