Plymouth, N.H. – On Wednesday, October 13 at Foley gymnasium the Lady Panthers volleyball team defeated St. Joseph three games to none in a best of five series. The Panthers improved their record to 20-8 on the season. During the first game, PSU dominated all over the court and the Panthers frontcourt towered over the Monks as senior Co-Captain Kim Krause led the way. St. Joes had no response for the Plymouth attack as junior Stacey Therrien served up ace after ace; the Panthers took the game 30-7. The second game started off at a quick pace as the Monks began to get on the board taking a slight lead, but that was the last time the Panthers would be trailing. St. Joe’s could not seem to locate their serves as Plymouth capitalized on their mistakes. The Monks fought back but kept on making costly errors that would ultimately cost them the game. The Panther’s backcourt kept the pressure on as the frontcourt led by Krause stifled any offensive attack by St. Joes; the final score was 30-19.In the third game the Panthers were off to a quick start as the frontcourt quickly denied the Monks of any scoring opportunities. Thierren made good use of her defense and recorded multiple aces right out of the gate. Plymouth seemed relentless as they fed off each other not making any mistakes, but the same could not be said for St. Joe’s as they struggled to launch any offensive attack. At this point the Lady Panthers had the game and the series under lock and key. PSU took the game with a score of 30-11, and swept the Monks 3-0.
Vollyball has been strong this year as the lady Panthers find themselves number thirteen in New England, and have just finished second at the Tom Hay Invitational, one of six tournaments for Plymouth, falling to Endicott in the final. Coach Moria Long gave notice to juniors Kelly Landry and Amanda Bagwell explaning, “Kelly is a great defensive player who hits the ball well and can find the hole to punch it through, while Amanda is strong on offense and good with decision making, as well as setting the tempo for our offense.” Landry and Bagwell received a honorable recognition being named to the All-Tournament Team. The lady Panthers are focused on Middlebury College on Wednesday 21, where Long said they hope to, “pass the ball, and serve tough.” The Panthers have had a very successful season and also hope to continue their winning ways in their final home match of the season on Tuesday, October 26 vs. Salem State.
