Waterville Valley, N.H. – Plymouth State men’s hockey lost its second straight in a well fought game at the University of Southern Maine 4-1 this past Tuesday Nov 30. The game was held with in one goal until the third period when USM pulled ahead on the tails of Panther penalties plus pop-shots on an empty net. The only score of the first period was shot from Southern Maine’s Mark Carragher who scored on a power play. While the attack of Plymouth moved the puck towards daylight, freshmen goalie Karl Helgesson (Lerum, Sweden) held fast in the net doing more than his service keeping the Huskies at bay. After the fist period, the score was 1-0 in favor of the Southern Maine Huskies. In the second period the Panthers were faced in an intensive five-on-three power play in favor of the Huskies. Inevitably the shot slipped by netminder Helgesson to make the score 2-0. Plymouth struck back off the rebound shot from freshman Chris Cadieux (Nashua, NH) at 7:32 in the third period. It was Cadieux’s sixth goal of the season and the score was 2-1 Plymouth maintaining their one deficit. Plymouth had faith in netkeeper Helgesson, who just qualified for the PAL Stovepipe All-Tournament Team, as well as being the ECAC co-player of the week along with teammate Deni Bojadzic (Gothenburg, Sweden) Plymouth coach Brett Tryder was forced to pull their goalie and add the extra man to find Southern Maine’s five-hole. Instead it was Southern Maine who pushed the puck into an empty Plymouth net to seal the defeat. While hard fought, the score does not care. The loss brings Plymouth State University to 2-4-1 overall. The Panthers have their next game at home where they will host Salve Regina University on Saturday at 6 pm at Waterville Valley. There is no admittance fee and all are encouraged to cheer on the ice Panthers.
