Using songs, stories, poems and a variety of period instruments such as minstrel banjo, cross tuned fiddle, harmonica, guitar, cow bones and the “limberjack”, New Hampshire’s own Skip Gorman will lead students from the Bethlehem Elementary School, the Bodhi Tree Montessori School and Wentworth Elementary School on an enriching and enjoyable journey through the history of the American West the week of December 6. Through the Friends’ Art Encounters Education Program students will learn about the lives of early pioneers and the real American West. Drawing on the lyrics of old time ballads themselves, Skip Gorman’s techniques have fueled writing and storytelling projects among students in schools where he has performed. Friends of the Arts Art Encounters Education Program brings artists, performers and programs to our rural schools each year. Many programs, like Skip Gorman’s connect directly with elementary and high school curriculum addressing several of the New Hampshire State Curriculum Frameworks.
