Broncos Trainer Wards off Deadly Infection

The Centers for Disease Control have recently issued another warning, this time regarding health clubs. Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, (MRSA or staph), is a potentially deadly disease that was once only found in hospitals. This “super bug” commonly exists on human skin or in the nose. There, it is harmless, but a small cut or abrasion can allow MSRA to enter the bloodstream. Because the bug is antibiotic-resistant, infection can be deadly. Untreated, MSRA can cause pneumonia, skin, bone, and bloodstream infections. The bug has spread to health clubs, and locker rooms. Steve Antonopolus. trainer for the Denver Broncos, says the bug can attack anyone, and apparently, some of the players on the team have had a problem with the bug. The Centers for Disease Control says that the bug is almost always spread through direct contact, and is not air born. It can be spread indirectly, which is where the gym and locker room are put into danger. Touching objects such as towels, equipment, and clothing that are infected can spread the disease. There are a few ways of identifying infection signs before they get too bad. An infection most often starts off as a small pimple or boil on the skin, and during this stage, it can be treated with antibiotics. The easiest way to prevent catching this bug is to take some simple and common sense actions. The Centers for Disease Control suggest washing hands and feet often and thoroughly, cleaning wounds immediately, washing gym clothes, uniforms, and towels often, keeping cuts covered until healed, and not touching anyone else’s open wounds. When you are in the gym, be sure to clean the station before and after you have used it. Most workout rooms have an anti-bacterial spray that can be used on the machines. Try to use paper towels to wash the machines, not rags, which could have been sitting out for days. Follow these simple steps, and you should be protected from MRSA, as well as the common cold.
