For many years Sodexho has provided Plymouth State University withmeals, snacks, drinks, and other foods. Their staff is friendly, open, and willing to help anyone enjoy their dining experiences morefully. What is not so well-known about the Sodexho branch here at PSU are the recycling and environment-friendly programs they have launched. Contrary to popular belief, Sodexho has put a large amount of effort into recycling as much as possible. All of their glass, cardboard, and cooking grease are recycled, as well as 95% of plastics. According to the Director of Operations, Sandy Marotte, this, in addition to buying in bulk cuts down on the amount of waste from things like canned ketchup and spaghetti sauce used. Since cans are not recycled as much as much as other Sodexho waste products, buying in bulk cuts down. It also decreases the amount of landfill space used by the company.Due to cost-effectiveness, only so much can be done to beenvironmentally friendly. Sodexho must make a profit. What is costeffective, says Marotte, is the use of Styrofoam over paper plates. Inaddition, Sodexho is looking to recycle Styrofoam in the future. The problem with this however, is that Styrofoam never breaks down. This is something that Sodexho is looking into, and in the future, they plan on using recycleable Styrofoam, which is currently extremely expensive. While Sodexho and other campus facilities have a long way to go to reach sustainability, much has been done in the past few years. Surely, everyone starts with baby steps, but hopefully, great strides will come soon. Sodexho has always served the community of Plymouth State University students well. This is just another of their many ways of enhancing the positive environment of PSU, and improve it even further.
