Do it in the Dark, the annual energy-saving contest between residence halls, will be taking place all the way until December 1st. The best part, other than reducing energy consumption, is that the winning hall gets half-priced laundry for the whole month of February.

In these months, we measure a percentage of savings per square foot in each hall and compare it to a baseline average consumption taken before the competition. At this point, there is only about a month left before we determine a winner, so act now if you want to save big on laundry this winter. Need some tips for getting started? Here’s what we recommend:

Open the shades and soak in all of the natural light, turn off the lights when leaving, keep the windows and doors closed when the heat is on, take the stairs instead of the elevator, unplug electronics when not in use and go spend some time outside.

Look around campus for flyers that have more information and more tips. Also, feel free to stop by the new Office of Environmental Sustainability building right across from the main entrance of Hyde if you want to know more about what you can do to be sustainable not only in the residence halls, but all over campus.
