With Halloween nearly upon us, there’s no better time than now to pit some the best horror and thriller film franchises in a head-to-head battle to see who comes out on top. Keep in mind that these grudge matches are not so much a battle between the characters themselves, but more about the quality of the film series’. So without further ado, here’s the line-up, along with the film franchise they are associated with:
Jaws (“Jaws” film series)
Jason (“Friday the 13th)
Freddy (“Nightmare in Elm Street”)
Michael Myers (“Halloween”)
Jigsaw (“Saw”)
Leather face (“The Texas Chainsaw Massacre”)
Ghost face (“Scream”)
Hannibal (“Silence of the Lambs”)
Chucky (“Child’s Play”)
Norman Bates (“Psycho”)
Round 1
Jaws Vs. Norman Bates
Both of these series are instant classics. “Psycho” had unquestionably one of the scariest scenes in horror history with the infamous shower scene. Then there is “Jaws”, probably one of the greatest film series ever made. “Jaws” had the better scenes between the two and is still watched and remembered today while the movie “Psycho” and it’s sequels along with Norman Bates are slowly forgotten. “Jaws” swims to live another day.
Jigsaw Vs. Leather face
The “Saw” Series will take the cake on this mash-up against the “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” series (TCM). Not only because “Saw” is a more recent series and has become very popular, but also the intricate and well constructed plot is what makes “Saw” the better series with creative kills and never ending amounts of ungrateful souls. While TCM is just a blood bath with an okay story, and merely a couple of screams and messed up ideas, “Saw” is more recent and creative.
Michael Myers vs. Ghost Face
The original “Halloween” alone has to beat “Scream” hands down. One for its never ending series that since the its first film has never let up and still is able to scare people to this day especially with the remake by Rob Zombie. Scream was a good series but it wasn’t as gruesome or terrifying as the other films and could only do so much against these icons of horror. Halloween is the victor.
Freddy vs. Hannibal
Now “The Silence of the Lambs” is good, deep, and extremely suspenseful. “A Nightmare on Elm Street” however has to take the win on this one, due to its longer series, stronger iconic character and just plain a great series that had stood the test of time. Considering “A Nightmare on Elm Street” is a more classic horror franchise, it wins this round.
Jason vs. Chucky
Honestly there’s no question which series is better. “Child’s Play” is simply… well, child’s play compared to the “Friday the 13th” series. The killer is scarier, the deaths are more gruesome, and the fear factor is greater. The idea of a killer doll isn’t nearly as scary as a hockey mask wearing machete wielding serial killer.
Round 2
Jaws Vs. Jigsaw
The “Jaws” and the “Saw” series is a really intense match up. New verses old, complex verses simple. The match-up is close but Jaws has to win, it’s a classic and has a reputation that can’t be beat. You show anyone the cover of jaws and they will most likely recognize it. That alone coupled with the fear of open waters it causes, makes “Jaws” slide right by the “Saw” series.
Freddy Vs. Michael Myers
“Nightmare on Elm Street” against “Halloween” is a hard matchup to determine. Fans on both sides would tear each other’s heads off to prove their point. Both have been remade recently, and both stood the test of time, but the final decision is the story itself. Since “Nightmare On Elm Street” has an interesting story, the idea of a murderer killing people in their dreams. “Halloween” is just another mad man who is out to kill his sister; there is no question “Nightmare on Elm Street” deserves to win this round.
Jason
Due to the fact Jason has no opponent he goes on to the next round.
Round 3
Jason Vs. Freddy
“Friday the 13th” or “Nightmare on Elm street”? Once again we come to two series that have stood the test of time that feature great killers. In this battle the reputation of the films are what really decides the outcome. “Friday the 13th” has a great fan following that trumps “Friday the 13th” fans, plus the series had a very simple and original idea that has done a great job evolving over the years with little chance of it slowing down.
Jaws
With no opponent Jaws will now sit this round out.
Championship
Jaws Vs. Jason
As it has been said many times before, “Jaws” is a classic, but “Friday the 13th” has sequentially stood the test of time better with a remake and a longer series. If you think about it though, the reason “Jaws” hasn’t been remade is because no one dares to try and make remake for fear that it won’t even be able to compete with the original. So finally the greatest horror series of all time is “Jaws”, the series that makes you want to scream “GET OUT OF THE WATER!” the whole time.
