As students reawaken from their spring break slumber, rec sports is ready to go with a new season of sports to come. While the highly competitive rec basketball league came to a close this week, there are many sports to look forward to in the coming month.\
Matt Volitis, the headman for everything rec sports in his fifth year, reflected on what has been an outstanding basketball season for all involved. “This year saw the biggest league in rec sports history”, said Volitis, with fifty-three teams playing this year, including the first ever majority faculty/staff team. This was a fourteen-team increase from 2011, which also led to an increase in competitiveness within the league. Volitis is hopeful that the numbers seen this season in basketball can be maintained going into 2013.
The other sport making waves right now in rec sports is volleyball. With eleven teams fielded this year in volleyball, Volitis says they are seeing one of their most competitive seasons yet. Again, with numbers continuing to improve with each year, look for volleyball to continue its growth in 2013.
And with the seasons for volleyball and basketball coming to a close, a new season dawns for the spring rec activities. Coming this April will be two leagues: broomball and indoor soccer. In the coming season of indoor soccer, look for big numbers of teams to come out to play. Over forty teams has been commonplace in recent years of indoor soccer. With registration closing at the end of the week, anticipation is growing for an exciting season of soccer.
Meanwhile, broomball gets going just around the corner in April alongside indoor soccer. Entering its second year as a rec sport, there were twelve teams fielded last year in broomball, and Volitis is confident of an increase in participation for the upcoming season. Look for more info on the rec sports Facebook page on when all the broomball games will be taking place down at the ice arena.
Finally, rec sports will continue their tradition of hosting a softball tournament the weekend of Spring Fling, being the weekend of May 4th through 6th. Only sixteen teams can play in the tournament, so look out for more info coming out soon from rec sports.
Overall, rec sports looks to have a busy spring season with their various sports, and Volitis puts the credit on the student employees. “The thanks goes to the student employees. They are the ones putting the hard work into this.” Its shaping up to be a big season for rec sports, and we at The Clock will be here to cover it from start to finish.
