PLYMOUTH, N.H. Developed by the New Hamp-shire Humanities Council, War and the News: A Humanities Perspective is a series of programs designed to provide NH citizens with a sophis-ticated understanding of how the news we receive during wartime is created. The advent of live satellite footage has reshaped the relationship between the press, the Pentagon, and the public. Among the key questions that will be discussed in this month-long series are: What does and does not get reported? To what degree should the public “trust” what they hear in the media? What is the proper balance between national security and freedom of the press?Mr. Sussman will examine many of the issues involved in wartime reporting from his vantage point as an award-winning author and journalist, and an editor for three decades of one of the nation’s lead-ing newspapers. Sussman’s program will discuss the crucial and difficult choices that editors and reporters must make to balance the safety of troops and secrecy of military strategy with the primary goal of making information available to citizens through the free press.
A follow-up discussion to Bring-ing the War Home will take place at Pease Public Library in Plymouth on Monday, October 20 at 7:00 p.m. The discussion will be led by John Gfroerer, a NH-based documentary filmmaker and Lisa Brown, televi-sion reporter and producer. The event is sponsored by Pease Public Library, Plymouth with assistance from Plymouth State University.
