Since opening weekend of the fall semester, over 8 light poles have been either damaged or vandalized in the White Mountains Apartment Complex. Lights near the entrance to the apartments, side parking lots behind the University computer store, and the walkway to Armory road all appear to be damaged. The lighting, which is there to provide safety and vision during the dark hours of the night has made walking alone at night dangerous. The desire to light the White Mountains Apartment Complex is the same as it is all over campus. Damage reports to the lights of the White Mountain Complex go back as far as last spring. Lights have been damaged in a variety of ways, says Tom Weeks, apartment director for the student apartments. 6 poles been repaired this semester already, mostly damaged on the weekends by unknown parties. A majority of the poles have sustained damage on the top of the pole with the removing of the light itself, the damaged poles are now covered with a plastic bag. Other poles in the side parking lot behind the University Computer Store have received even more severe damage with the knocking down of the entire pole and cutting of electrical cords. The dimming of walking paths isn’t the only bad news with these damaged light poles. Residents of the WMAC may end up being charged with the damage costs if the one who is responsible for the damages is not found. The residents may see a increase in housing fees over the course of the semester if the damage continues. The WMCA’s Apartments Complex Assistants and Campus Police are looking into the vandalism and are open for contact for any information on the crimes. The safety of all the residents of the White Mountain Apartment Complex seems in jeopardy with the damaging of these light poles. The chances of rates being increased for the residents of the WMAC over the vandalism of public property is also up in the air and might happen soon. To the mystery of who is damaging the light poles, we’re only left in the dark.
