BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Josh Stolp (Hingham, Mass.) led the University of Massachusetts Boston back from an 11-8 fourth-quarter deficit Tuesday afternoon, propelling the Beacons to a 14-12 victory over Plymouth State College in the first round of the Little East Conference men’s lacrosse tournament at UMB’s Clark Athletic Center. Stolp scored three goals in the final frame as UMB outscored the Panthers 6-1 in the fourth quarter to post the come-from-behind win. The Beacons had pulled out an 11-10 overtime win over Plymouth State during the regular season after trailing 10-7 with five minutes remaining. UMass Boston improves to 7-8 on the season and moves on to face top-seeded Eastern Connecticut State University in a 4:00 p.m. semifinal Thursday in Willimantic, Conn. PSC concludes its season at 5-10 under first-year head coach John Pynchon. Stolp capped the scoring with an insurance goal at 3:32 of the fourth quarter, his 187th career goal, tying him with Jamie Mulroney (1992-94) for the most career goals in the program’s history. It was a close game throughout, as the score was tied 4-4 after one period and the hosts held a 7-6 advantage at halftime. PSC surged ahead in the third quarter, outscoring the Beacons 5-1 in the period to take an 11-8 advantage into the final stanza. Stolp evened the game at 12-12 with 5:25 to play, and freshman Ryan O’Rourke (Milton, Mass.) gave the Beacons the lead with his second of the afternoon a minute later. PSC seniors Ken McGuire (Wayland, Mass.) and Jason Biedrzycki (Amherst, N.H.) had strong performances in what turned out to be their final game in a Panther uniform. McGuire led the team with four goals and one assist, and finishes the season as the team scoring leader (29 goals, 17 assists, 46 points), while Biedrzycki had two goals and three assists Tuesday to conclude the season second on the team in scoring (16 goals, 26 assists, 42 points). McGuire wraps up his career with 139 points (79 goals, 60 assists) while Biedrzycki finishes with 140 points (67 goals, 73 assists). PSC also got three goals and one assist from freshman Jon Gagnon (New Bedford, Mass.), two goals and an assist from sophomore John Gallagher (Forestdale, Mass.), and one goal from freshman Bobby Dabrieo (Woburn, Mass.). UMB freshman goalie Nick Eaton (Rowley, Mass.) stopped 11 shots for UMass Boston, while PSC freshman Mike Rodrick (Plaistow, N.H.) made six saves.
