Wheaton upends PSU Men’s Lacrosse

NORTON, Mass. — The Wheaton College men’s lacrosse team scored early and often Tuesday afternoon against Plymouth State University, as the Lyons posted nine goals in the opening quarter en route to a 14-4 decision in a non-conference game at Mirrione Stadium. Wheaton improves to 4-2 on the season, while Plymouth State slips to 1-2 overall.Senior Zak Putnam figured in four of Wheaton’s first seven goals with a pair of tallies and two assists, while classmate Evan Carbotti also accounted for two scores and two helpers in the period. The Lyons led 5-0 with 4:25 on the clock and later reeled off four goals over a two-minute span to end the quarter. Junior Trevor Ogden added two goals in the opening stanza.Wheaton’s offense cooled down in the second quarter, as first-year attack Trey Helms posted the lone goal of the period and the hosts led 10-0 at the break. Wheaton senior goalie Bryant Denny had seven saves in the half.Both teams posted four goals apiece to complete the scoring in the second half. Plymouth State sophomore Bobby Dabrieo got the Panthers on the scoreboard with 12:51 to play in the third quarter. Dabrieo finished with two goals and sophomore Jon Gagnon had a goal and an assist. Junior Pat O’Malley scored the other Panther goal.Putnam finished the game as Wheaton’s scoring leader with three goals and two assists, while sophomore John Sharry also had three goals.Denny played just over a half in net and finished with eight stops, while freshmen Nick Jones and Chris Manaro combined for 10 saves for the Lyons. Sophomore Michael Rodrick had four stops in one quarter of action for Plymouth, while freshman Steve Valeri posted 13 saves the rest of the way.The Panthers open the Little East Conference portion of the schedule this weekend with road games at Keene State on Saturday (3:30 p.m.) and Western Connecticut on Sunday (12:00 p.m.).
