The Men’s Soccer team came away with a huge overtime victory at Little East Conference rival Keene State on Saturday, October 14th. This marked the second win for Plymouth at Keene in as many years.
Senior Nick Rutherford (Sydney, Australia) led the way for the Panthers netting both of their goals on the day.
Rutherford scored his first goal at 10:55 off of a pass from sophomore Joni Hongisto (Kaarina, Finland). Keene would answer with a goal of their own almost 20 minutes later, slipping a shot past freshman goal-keeper Linus Lindeberg (Stockholm, Sweden).
With the game tied, Plymouth had opportunities to score including a crucial penalty kick in the 57th minute that was turned away by Keene’s goalkeeper, keeping the tie intact and forcing overtime.
In overtime, both teams exchanged shots. With a little more than a minute left to play in extra time, Plymouth made a final push getting off 2 shots before the ball popped free in front of the empty net. Rutherford cleaned up on the rebound, scoring the game winning goal and giving Plymouth the 2-1 edge against their longtime rival.
Lindeberg on the day made 5 saves against 6 shots on goal.
The Panthers improve their record to 8-3 (2-2 LEC) while Keene drops to 6-3-3 (2-1-1 LEC). Plym- outh’s next matchup is against another LEC opponent. This time PSU will visit Southern Maine on Saturday, the 14th. The game is set to begin at 2:30pm.
