Most newcomers to PSU may know about the Barden Bellas, the all-female a cappella cast of popular film series Pitch Perfect, but what they might not recognize is that there is an all-female a capella group right on campus.
Mixed Emotions has been around since 1994, and in its 21 years of operation, has grown immensely. In the past year, however, the group has had to cut back on the number of girls that were in the group. Having gone from 16 members last year, Mixed Emotions has been reduced to 13 members as of this year. The decrease in members, however, has not diminished the group’s power or enthusiasm. “In the past two years Mixed Emotions has been a part of the ICCA's (International Competition Collegiate A cappella) we are auditioning again this year and are excited to hopefully go again,” said Mixed Emotions’s Business Director, Jaclyn Goodrich. “We are very excited for the ICCA's. Our group gets to travel to Boston as well as spend quality time with each other, which is very important to us. Even if we don't get in, we still have a killer set list and will be performing our ICCA songs at our Christmas concert in December,” said Goodrich.
With any group, each year means the loss of regular faces and the introduction of new ones. The auditions for Mixed Emotion this year had over 50 girls trying out, with 5 available spots open. While each girl auditioning was very talented, it all came down to what voice parts were needed in the group. “Being a Theatre major, I know how scary it can be to audition. So I really admire all the girls who took the time to come sing for us,” said Goodrich. The encouraging atmosphere of Mixed Emotions reassures any girl who didn’t make the audition to try again next fall.
This talented group of women, perform around campus and has two concerts at the end of each semester. They utilize their voices in songs from all time periods, as well as songs that show the audience that they’re a powerful group of women. So, if there are students whose knowledge of all-female a capella is limited solely to Pitch Perfect, then try to attend a Mixed Emotions performance around the PSU campus this year.
