Over the years, Plymouth State students have heard the rumors that various spirits haunt this very campus. The most famous stories that circulate through the student body, are the legends of the ghost that lives in Mary Lyon’s basement, as well as the spirit of the young boy that is said to linger about in Samuel Read Hall Hall, (also known as Hall Hall). Leaning in on these rumors is paranormal investigator and first year, Clay Harbert, and sophomore, KellyJo Boland who did their own investigation into the mysteries inside Hall Hall. The following is a recap of their experience in Hall Hall.
“The night started off with Sgt. Dawes unlocking the building for us to gain entry,” said Harbert, “... instantly I felt some spiritual energy flowing throughout the buildings floors. I brought Sgt. Dawes up to the third floor to gain access to the fourth, because the stories tell of a boy who hung himself in the attic one night.”
Dawes expressed a fear of the fourth floor at first, but was talked into climbing the stairs. Students, as well as various staff have reported, there is a punching bag up there now that moves all on it’s own for unexplained reasons, so Harbert had wanted to put a mounted camera up there to see if he could get anything. Unfortunately, Sgt. Dawes didn’t have a key to the fourth floor so Dawes went back down to the first floor and said goodbye. After Harbert and Boland had set all of their extra equipment and various bags down on the first floor, they made their way back up to the third to set up a mounted camera to view Harbert’s necklace hanging on a chain, which was hung on a pipe to detect movement. With that in place, Harbert started feeling something on the second floor. That is the next place they decided to check out.
They then went into a conference room where they started doing an EMF (Electromagnetic Field) reading. The room was adjacent to the kitchen, where Harbert had a camera and his flashlight. With the detector working it was only a matter of time until a spirit would try to make contact. Eventually one did, the spirit was an old employee of the school.
Harbert would ask her to make tapping noises on the wall or the door, and every time, there would be a reaction. The spirit was very cooperative.
After a while the spirit moved away, and the EMF detector picked up another spirit. “It felt malicious in a way,” said Harbert “I didn’t like it at all. It said it wanted us to go so I wanted to confirm. I asked, “if you want us to leave tap again,” and it made a huge knock on the wall, so we got up in a hurry. Right after we stood up though, my flashlight started blinking on and off... and I know it was the spirit because my flashlight doesn’t have a strobe function...”
When asked about what else happened in Hall Hall, Boland said, “Right before we left the entire building, we went back to the first floor. Clay had told me that there was a classroom in particular that he wanted to see, because he has felt a presence inside every time he walks near there from outside. I was feeling tired so without much thought I sat down at my desk, because this is my classroom during the day, and that’s when I see Clay start panicking a little. He told me that in the desks in front of me, he saw a girl grinning and turned towards me like she wanted to tell me something.” After that both Harbert and Boland decided to leave the hall. The next day something else strange happened. “Clay kept telling me the number 1957 just kept coming to him from out of nowhere ever since we went into that classroom,” said Boland. “so I went into Lamson Library the following day and found the yearbook. Within that book in the graduating seniors section was the girl he saw in the classroom looking at me. Another picture showed her in front of Samuel Read Hall turned around with her friends grinning... almost like she had a secret to share...”
Upon reviewing the footage the next day of the third floor camera, two voices could be heard, and both voices were distressed screams.
