On Wednesday, Oct. 21 PSU welcomed Mark Everson, presidential candidate for the Republican Party in the 2016 election, onto campus. Everson shared his views on the various social topics that are debated among the other candidates.
“When I got out of school, I started working as an auditor so I learned all I could about finance,” said Everson. “After that I went to Washington D.C and joined the Reagan Revolution and I loved it. I found my calling there.” Everson said while he worked alongside Reagan, he learned everything there was to know about politics, and the overall aim of the Republican Party.
Everson chose to be very open ended when searching for a profession by taking a job as a chairman of a tax firm, following his strength with finance.
“I traveled around the country, and there was a certain dismay about our political system, and it’s on both sides of the aisle not just the Republicans or Democrats,” said Everson.
“I saw an opening where a potential spot could be filled by someone who isn’t a politician, but knows an awful lot about how the government works.”
In early March, Everson started up his position as a candidate in the race for the White House, but feels he has been overshadowed by Donald Trump’s methods in the presidential race. Everson’s first focus is on tax reform, and promises to “bring it back to it’s original framework” where it can grow and adjust again.
“The deficit problem, and the spending problem is a huge concern to me,” said Everson. “Some plans I have been witnessed to are established as if you were going to go home and tell your parents, hey I got a job that pays LESS than my old one.”
On the topic of security, Everson played a role in the overall being in the creation of Homeland Security. “I think we need to go back to our traditional foreign policy,” said Everson. “We need to watch out for our own security interest, and team up with our own allies.”
Everson also referenced his plan to help the economy by creating a neutral taxation, so that overbearing taxes won’t bury those who cannot afford to pay higher amounts.
He concluded by giving a talk about how ideas are what really shape this country, and this world.
“Just being around those that can teach you something in general is really what helps people move forward in life, and you don’t even need to agree with everything said.”
