Solid Performance From Women’s Hockey Couldn’t Break

It was a heartbreaking loss as Plymouth State Women’s Ice Hockey fell just short to New England College 2-1. The goaltending seemed to be the story of this one at both ends of the ice. Freshman Lindsey Powers (Stittsville, Ont.) made 29 saves to earn the win for NEC. Freshman net minder Emelie Lindqvist (Gullerasen, Sweden) stopped 24 shots in the PSU net.

The Panthers scored the only goal in the opening period when sophomore Gracie Shewell (Hanover, MD) let loose a shot from the left point, sniping the top left corner of the goal with traffic in front. Senior Marisa Zamrock (Lewiston, ME) and freshman Christina D’Alessandro (Bloomfield, N.J.) tallied the assists.
NEC outshot the Panthers 9-8 in the first period. While PSU had a 13-8 advantage in the second, it remained a 1-0 game going into the third. NEC finally pulled even at 13:45 of the third period, as a shot by senior Andrea St. Onge went off the right post and junior Mackenzie Meegan stuffed in the rebound. Plymouth State had a chance to regain the lead with five minutes remaining but again, goaltending stood out as Powers made a great save on a Plymouth State breakaway by junior Lauren Connelly (Braintree, Mass). NEC won in overtime when Vigliano skated in from the left circle, going top shelf for the game-winner.

Plymouth State is back at home tonight, as they take on non-conference Becker College at 6 PM.
