Most schools look forward to Saturday night football.
Plymouth State? We look forward to Saturday night hockey.
It only helps that this year’s team is on fire. With a 6-1 overall record and unbeaten in conference play, it can be debated that this team is a favorite a to run the table. Senior Josh Woody is always right in the middle of things.
Woody, a senior marketing major from Sunderland, Maryland, has been an offensive powerhouse this year. Woody has nine points on the season, including a MASCAC player of the Week recognition after outstanding outings against Framingham State (three goals and an assist) and Fitchburg State (assist and game-winning goal). He’s tied for 3rd in points total in the conference, sharing the bid with fellow senior and captain Mike Economos (Crystal Lake, Ill.). In a close game, you can count on Woody to mix things up on the ice: big hits, smooth passes, key goals. It’s hard to miss the red beard on the ice, and this week, he sat down for an interview for this week’s installment of 10 Seconds.
When did you first get started with hockey?
I started hockey when I was 5 years old. My parents had taken me to a Capitals game and the sport has been a huge part of me ever since.
If you were to give this season a grade so far, what would it be?
So far we have I would give us a B. The reason being, we haven't quite played a full 60 minutes. There are areas of our game that need to improve for us to reach our team goals. We have the pieces to reach them though.
What's on your pregame playlist?
I get really amped before games, so for the most part I keep it light. As of late, I got to say the Biebs has taken over the playlist.
Why Plymouth?
To be honest, I had never even heard of Plymouth before I came here. I honestly chose it for the rink and the hockey. My mom was not pleased that I chose Plymouth, but this place presents a lot of great opportunities with a lot of great people.
Best memory as a PSU student so far?
Last year winning the MASCAC Championship. For us to win the championship in front of our fans, and to have it in our barn was incredible.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
In five years I see myself most likely working in the Philadelphia area. By that point I will be looking to move south. I am a bit over the cold weather.
How is the team chemistry so far?
Team chemistry is great. Our team is very close, and we get along great. The freshmen we had coming in have blended in seamlessly. We have a lot of character guys on the team.
How big is the target on your back as defending conference champs?
Target is big, but it isn't any bigger than it has been over the past 4 years. We have showed that we are a dominant force in our league and a lot of these teams want nothing more than to beat us. So we have to show up every night.
Six goals through your first six games... How do you do it?
Luck, I guess. I just go to the net, 85% of the goals I score are with in 15 feet of the net.
What's one thing you'll miss about Plymouth as you near closer and closer to graduation?
Besides the hockey, I will miss the spring. It is great to be able to go outside in shorts and short sleeves, even if it is only 55 degrees. But the spring is when our team is able to take our foot off the gas pedal and relax a bit more.
Josh Woody on “The Lemon”
So at the end of each pregame practice, we put the pucks and players in the middle of the ice with goalies at both ends in the nets. One at a time we take breakaways, and once you score you are done. The last player left that doesn't score has to eat a lemon, peel and all.
