With the spring term now underway and winter teams closing out their schedules, Plymouth State’s first year in Track and Field is on pace for an above average start. The men finished 3rd and women finished 4th in the first ever Plymouth State Invitational January 16th. Although both teams struggled at the Bowdoin Invitational on the 23rd, there was a strong turnaround this past Saturday, as the men finished 6th out of 15 in the Tufts Stampede, and the women finished 13th out of 18. Isaiah Bolden (Dover, NH) won the 60 meter dash, which pushed him through ECAC qualifications, and Warren Bartlett (Loudon, NH) won the 1,000 meter dash for the men. Sam Brunnette (Newport, VT) also was honored second in the mile run, posting a time of 4:23. Track and field has one more regular season meet in Dartmouth this Saturday before hosting its first ever LEC championships, held February 13th in the new All Well North building.
Matt Froio is continuing his outstanding first year with the Plymouth State Wrestling team, as they look to get back to winning tomorrow against Johnson & Wales and Springfield College. Although Froio (Cohassett, Mass) holds the team record with 15 wins on the season, they’re coming off a five match losing streak, with their latest coming last weekend in a tri-meet with WPI and SUNY Brockport. Bruce McLee (Washingtonville, NY) had the only victory in the 197 weight class. Froio and McLee posted three wins the weekend before in the “Headlock for Hunger” dual championships at Bridgewater State, The two look to get things going again in their last regular season meet tomorrow at home, 11 AM start time in Foley Gymnasium.
The Plymouth State ski team has been finishing right around the middle of the pack this season, with a consistency of ups and downs through their first three carnivals on both the men’s and women’s side. Freydis Halla Einarsdottir (Gardabaer, Iceland) has been the story of the year thus far, as she placed third in the slalom event at the UVM carnival at Stowe Mountain. With her best finish in slalom this past weekend, she also cracked the top 10 in giant slalom, finishing 9th out of 70 competitors for the first time this season. Helping the sensational rookie has been Charlotte Lemgart (Vaerloese, Denmark), the junior that finished 19th in slalom this past weekend. Although the men’s team has been struggling lately, strong performances from senior Max Martin (Salt Lake City, Utah) have gave the team life through the first half of the season. With a high mark of 9th in the giant slalom and top 20 marks in slalom, the senior did not finish in the last three races he participated in. Look to see how both teams come out next weekend in Dartmouth.
The Plymouth State women’s swimming/diving team has been through some adversity this season, but found a way to win their last three meets and placed 5th out of 7 in the LEC championships this past weekend at UMass Dartmouth. The freshman of Plymouth State continued to impress, as Julia Mazza (Belchertown, Mass.), Julia West (Wiscasset, Maine) and Deanne DeGrazia (Westport, Mass.) all had top finishes in the meet. Mazza finished fourth in the 100-yard butterfly and sixth in the 100-yard freestyle. DeGrazia beat her best time in the500-freestyle and finished 11th with a time of 5:50:57. Julia West placed fourth in the 50-yard free and seventh in the 100-yard backstroke. The team will lastly compete in the NEISDA championships from February 12-14 at the University of Rhode Island, and finished with their best record since the 2009-2010 season ast 7-3.
