Chances are, if you don’t ski or snowboard, the title of this article makes as much sense as non-alcoholic beer, meatball-less spaghetti, and winters without snow. Don’t worry, I’m here to explain.
“Jib” is a verb describing the act of throwing one’s self into a long, narrow heap of metal, while standing on an overly expensive piece of plasticinfused wood. The main goal of “jibbing” is to make it successfully to the end of the rail, while exerting copious amounts of steeze. Steeze for those of you who are unsure of its meaning is a combination of style and ease. “Rail Jam” might sound to you like an exotic breakfast condiment for thrill seekers. Unfortunately, Smuckers has yet to capitalize on this great business opportunity, but not to worry; this type of Rail Jam has enough danger to make a drill sergeant pee his pants. A “Rail Jam” is where snowboarders and skiers show-off their “jib” skills to a crowd of spectators, judges, and peers, hoping to impress. In other words, we are going to risk our lives for entertainment. Yes, that’s right- you can watch a bunch of greasy (yet brave, handsome and talented) degenerates do death defying stunts in real time.
We are aware that snow is a necessary component for this event, and we are well aware that there’s not much of that so far. However, hopes are high. Boarding Club President, Luke Giacopelli has faith in the future:
“When there’s a will, there’s a way,” said Giacopelli. “This year is going to be the best one yet. It’s the second largest event at Plymouth, and it’s always a blast.” You heard it here first folks. This one’s going to be a banger.
On March 4th, MAPS is teaming up with the Snowboard Club and Waterville Valley Parks to present to you Jib Free or Die. So get ready to bundle up and take to the hill on the side of the ice arena to watch, or if you’re brave enough… participate. Price: Free.
