Everyone loves free stuff. Hugs are free, lollipops at the bank are free and for a little while, even El Chapo was free. However, Plymouth States 2016 Rail Jam: Jib Free or Die trumps any bank or Mexican drug lord...It had free Monster! Not to mention the free Monster paraphernalia and free cookies and free, unregulated listening to the hottest rap tunes of the 2000’s (censored obviously). In fact, it’s a miracle I’m even writing this considering I drank 4 monsters in an hour. I can thank snowboarding for putting all that extra energy to use.
In addition to the all of the totally free Monster, there was an arsenal of grade A free rails from Waterville Valley. An A frame, shotgun, pole jam and a donkey kink rail showed up to party. However, for a select group of students, the A frame was a Z frame, the shotgun was a pistol, and the donkey kink was a wild fire-breathing-dragon-kink. What I’m getting at here is that there may have been inebriated students there because the jam was basically a big free party. You didn’t even have to search on craigslist, pay the hosts and you couldn’t really get kicked out! This was truly a rare, beautiful happening.
The event had at least twice the audience it had last year.
One Shea Beando, a sophomore here at Plymouth who was performing drunken front flips for the screaming crowd said that “It was way sicker than last year!” Zach Ganley, a very talented sophomore snowboarder here agreed, saying “It was the best day of my life.”
There were many riders turning heads during the jam, but the judges crowned the victors with product from the sponsors, bragging rights and a night’s supply of free beer from friends. Coming out on top for girls was Kim Edmunds, followed by Sophie Levert and Nicole Frati. For the men’s heat, second and third place went to Bryan Watson and Kyle Dorfman and first went to freshman Jackson Happ.
A big thanks is due to all that played a role in making this happen: Tenney Mountain, Waterville Valley, PSU physical plant and Snowboard Clubs merry band of ruffians for creating a shredable snow globe where there once was an icy lake, the sponsors who came to bless all there with their gifts (Monster bro), all the riders and spectators for making it as big as it was, and finally MAPs and Luke Giacopelli for spending a hefty chunk of their lives organizing and coordinating this event.
