On Sunday, April 17, PSU’s student senate approved the proposal to change the Safe Walk program from a section of Residential Life into a student run organization.
Over the years Safe Walk has been a job tasked to Community Advisors on campus to take calls from students and escort individuals home who feel unsafe, or cannot get home themselves, after a night out. However Community Advisors had to stay within the dorms, where only the people in the dorms knew they were there, and due to being an on campus program, Safe Walk couldn’t venture off campus to help students with assistance that could really need it.
After two attempted abductions early on in the fall 2015 semester, Clay Harbert approached Ethan Munns, and together he and Munns came up with the idea of creating their own branch of Safe Walk that could work outside of campus grounds, and get to where students needed help late at night.
“I wanted Safe Walk to have the ability to go onto Russell Street and Landon Street, where we've had a few issues especially in the fall semester of 2015,” said Harbert, “Furthermore, students are reluctant to call for Safe Walk because if they have been drinking, they are afraid they could be written up or face police action. Although Safe Walk does not condone the underage consumption of alcohol in any way, we recognize that students may make this choice and still need to get home safely. This new Student Organization will allow a safe walk home by a fellow student and a friend, rather than an authority figure.”
In addition, by word-of-mouth, and articles like this one, Safe Walk can expand greatly on what the organization is really about. Helping students get home safely, and building a safer community on campus and off. With the birth of this new organization comes a new opportunity for students to get involved and help make a difference by being a part of a club dedicated to looking out for others. If a student ever needs a walk home, never hesitate to call us.
