Two new open labs have been introduced to the campus as part of the University’s plan to incorporate clusters. Located in the Lamson Library, the open labs will allow students to work together on interdisciplinary projects both inside and outside the classroom.

The labs will incorporate new technology that allows students to perform many different tasks. While both labs allow students to bring their own devices, the lower lab is equipped with 12 Macs and six Dell computers.

All of the new computers are able to be used for multimedia creation, including video editing, image manipulation, and 3-D creation.

Another service these labs will provide is the new Print Depot, where students can print posters and have access to 3-D printing and photo-quality printing. The Print Depot hours are Monday-Thursday 9 a.m.-9 p.m., Friday-Saturday 12 p.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m.-9 p.m. The open labs are open during regular library hours.

The labs are open to students now. On Thursday, Sept. 8, the library held an open house that allowed students, faculty, and staff to see the new labs and the possibilities these spaces provide for the University.

Elaine Allard, the interim dean for library and academic support services, said, “At the present time, there are two technology rich open labs in Lamson. A third collaboration/ thinking type of open lab will open in the Museum of the White Mountains starting later in September. Additional labs may be part of future considerations as clusters develop and evolve.”

These labs are an opportunity for students to learn new skills and work with students from other disciplines. As the new cluster system continues to be implemented on campus, these opportunities will continue to be available.
