On Monday September 5th, the Plymouth State University Volunteers kicked off their year with a bang. Pitch Like a Panther was a day of service that spread out over the Plymouth community. Members of the club went to work on a habitat for humanity project, while others went to the local thrift store Ladders to help paint the handicap access ramp to the store.
PSU Volunteers is a campus based organization that specializes in volunteering and performing community services on campus, in the local community, and around the world. The club does an average of one event a week, often on the weekends. “We are open to volunteering anywhere we could be helpful,” club president Taylor Fourniner said. “We have several events held every year, like preparing and delivering Thanksgiving baskets in November. But we also do smaller events throughout the year. Holidays are definitely the busiest time of the year.”
The volunteering organization not only has connections within the Plymouth community, but worldwide as well. Collaborating with the Nicaragua Club, PSU volunteers works with an elementary school in Nicaragua. Last year, money was raised to give the school five fans. This year, the club plans to raise money so the school can purchase trash cans, dry erase boards, and a water fountain. The club plans to do a month of fundraising later this semester.
PSU Volunteers is open to anyone on campus who is interested. Meetings are held every Monday at 7 in the HUB room 109. If someone is interested in helping volunteer, they can go to any event on campus and log their hours, but it is recommended that anyone who wants to help go to the meetings. If members log 15 hours of volunteer work, they are given a PSU volunteer’s t-shirt at the end of the semester. If members log 25 hours, they receive a special gift.
In everything they do, PSU Volunteers follow the motto of Plymouth State “Ut Prosim”- “that I may serve”.
