On Sunday September 4th, Plymouth State’s Men’s soccer team took on non-conference New England College at Melander Field in Henniker, NH. The Panthers would earn their first win of the season Sunday as they bested the Pilgrims of New England College, 2-1.
The first thirty minutes remained scoreless until New England College Sophomore, Cooper Valinski, made his way through the Panther defense to find the net and give the Pilgrims their only goal of the day. That lead was short lived however. In the 36th minute of regulation, the Panthers struck back with their first goal of the game, a lob shot that found the back of the net from freshman Truls Julseth, (Fredrikstad, Norway). The remainder of the first half went scoreless, as neither team was able to find the net until the second half of play commenced.
Just five minutes into the second half of the game, the Panthers scored what would end up being the game winning goal as Junior Nick Rutherford, (Sydney, Austalia) scored off of a somewhat unorthodox goal. His free kick soared towards the goal, ricocheting off of the crossbar and bouncing off of the New England College goalkeeper’s back and into the net. From that point on the Panthers were in charge of the scoreboard, and were able to walk away with their first win of the season.
With this non-conference win, the Panthers move to 1-0-1 on the season and look to face Bridgewater State University today, September 9th, at Arold field. Tip off is slotted at 5:00 p.m.
