The Plymouth State Panthers continued their hot start to the season following a 27-19 victory over Western Connecticut on Saturday, giving the Panthers a 3-0 record for the first time since 2007. Sophomore quarterback Zack Edwards (Brookfield, MA) continued his dominance Saturday, completing 11 of 19 passes for 124 yards and one touchdown. Mitch Banuskevich (Milton, NH) would lead all backs Saturday, going 78 yards on 15 carries. Freshman David Hamilton (Westville, NJ) would add to the rush game as well, running 33 yards on 14 carries along with a touchdown.
The Plymouth State defense played a significant role in the game, causing Western Connecticut to turn the ball over four times on Saturday. Plymouth picked off Western Connecticut twice last week, with one resulting in a 86 yard interception for a 4th quarter touchdown by Junior Blair Zentek (Simsbury, CT).
The special teams unit would also contribute to the offense. Midway through the second quarter following a Western Connecticut touch-down, Zach Ziemba (Manchester, N.H.) blocked the extra point try and returned it for 98 yards for two defensive extra-points, giving the Panthers a 17-13 lead in the second. The Panthers would follow up that play with a 50 yard drive on nine plays, resulting in a 44 yard field goal from sophomore Jeff Madden (Wolfeboro, N.H.) to give Plymouth State a 20-13 lead going into the second half. Each team would score once more in the final 15 minutes, with PSU coming up with win number three.
The Plymouth State Panthers will look to add another win to their unbeaten streak this Saturday, when they host Umass Dartmouth for Homecoming weekend. UMD cur- rently sits with a 2-1 record. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
