Bernie Sanders gave a speech at Plymouth State University on November 2, in favor of Democratic Presidential Nominee Hillary Clinton. There were roughly 300 people in attendance to listen to what the Vermont Senator had to say. “This campaign is not about Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump, it’s about you,” Sanders remarked to a cheering crowd.
Sanders would go on to discuss the “rigged” economy and “broken” Democratic system the United States faces today. He openly attacked the Koch brothers, who ha ve money invested in big oil companies, and donated millions of dollars in campaign funds to whomever favors their agenda. “Secretary Clinton will not nominate anyone to the Supreme Court if he or she will not openly overturn Citizens United,” Sanders said.
According to Bernie, thanks to Democratic Senator of New Hampshire, Maggie Hassan, New Hampshire has the lowest unemployment rate in the United States at 3.8% as of April of 2015.
Despite making this claim, Sanders would go on to say, “New Hampshire and Vermont folks are working one, two, even three jobs to make enough income and get the heal th care they need.“ He suggested that Hillary Clinton, along with himself would like to raise the minimum wage across the country to $15/hr, whereas currently in New Hampshire the minimum wage in $7.25/hr. Sanders argued that Clinton would also introduce equal pay for women, as well as paid maternity leave as well as medical leave.
Social Security, Health Care, and corporations were also on Bernie’s mind as he addressed the crowd about how to fix Washington. “Secretary Clinton and I believe in healthcare for every man, woman, and child as a right,” Sanders said.
Bernie also brought up the idea of clean energy if Clinton is elected into office. “Clinton is listening to science, Trump thinks it’s a hoax,” the Vermont Senator said, adding that since switching to solar and wind energy, Vermont fuel bills have gone down 50%.
The idea of free tuition for public colleges and universities fired up the crowd. The Vermont Senator claimed that Clinton was proposing for those who make less than $120,000 a year, roughly 83% of the population should get free college tuition. “If the economy is going to succeed, we need the best educated workforce in the world,” Sanders noted. He also said he would like to see student debt interest refinanced from 13% now to around 3-5%.
Overall, the crowd seemed impressed by what the former Democratic Presidential Candidate had to say. Senior Abaigeal Molinari had this to say, “I thought it was really good and tied all of America’s issues into one speech along with PSU’s issues and addresses the issues of students and surrounding community.”
Ryan Geppert, also a senior and resident of New Hampshire, was also impressed by the speech. “Bernie Sanders did an incredible job of addressing issues, highlighting issues of the country as well as Democratic Senate tipping issues people needed to hear the most.” Both seniors plan on voting on Election Day.
Sanders would go on to thank the people of New Hampshire for voting for him in the primary. He would later add, “Trump is going to lose on November 8, and he and his friends are going to pay their fair share in taxes.”
