If you’re looking for something new to do in town, you won’t have to look too hard.
Shadowspear Event Center and Gaming Lounge is one of the most unique venues in town, and it’s located right on Main Street. With live performances and events, this new-to-town company is most notorious for its virtual reality lounge and gaming consoles.
Troy Douglas is one of the venue’s co-owners. After starting Shadowspear Music Group back in 2006, he wanted to bring to the Plymouth area something that hasn’t been done. “My wife and I moved into the area a while back. I stopped into Downtown Pizza one night in September, and the place was packed with college students. I knew I had to do something to get them entertained,” he said.
Douglas, along with co-owners Mike Mendo and Charles MacMillan, took over the building recently and have made major renovations since acquiring it. “One of our biggest things here is security, and that was what we want to bring to the community,” Douglas said. Keeping true to his word, Shadowspear has completely swapped out the fire alarm system that was previously in place, along with a brand-new security system. He also has his own security staff for every event to ensure safety for both spectators and performers alike.
Shadowspear’s top priority might be different than what the Plymouth State campus is typically used to, especially on campus. “We didn’t want to serve alcohol here, because that isn’t our objective,” said Douglas. “What we have here is supposed to be interactive. We have video games, we have pool tables, and we have board games. We have live events; everything that Shadowspear provides is to get kids off their phones and interacting with one another.” Douglas also said that the addition of another bar would be pointless to the area, and that there is no point in competing with the other restaurants and bars on Main Street.
Last weekend was Shadowspear’s official opening, and with pop star Aaron Carter on stage Friday night, the turnout was as expected. “Aaron [Carter] was someone I’ve known for a while, as is Bizarre [who performed Saturday night]. I want people to know that if there’s a performer set to play here, we aren’t messing around,” said Douglas.
As Shadowspear is new to town, people might not know as to what to make of it. If you’re unsure, go inside yourself and take a look around. It’s an 18-and-up venue, and to walk through the doors Monday thru Friday is free, with weekend events pending price. The virtual reality room runs at $5 per half hour, and to use any of the gaming consoles will run $3 per half hour or $5 per hour. The gaming rooms are equipped with every console imaginable, from the classic Atari and Nintendo 64 consoles to today’s Xbox One. Douglas added that all of the classic consoles are complete with every game ever made for them, so enjoying the originals will no longer be a hassle on your own.
“We want young adults in the area to do something interactive,” Douglas said. “You can go anywhere to use your phone, so we wanted to make a safe environment that gives people the opportunity to interact.”
Shadowspear Event Center and Gaming Lounge is open Monday thru Wednesday from 6-11 p.m., Thursday from 6 p.m.-1 a.m., and Friday-Saturday from 6 p.m.-2 a.m. For further information on event planning, questions, or concerns, follow the link for Shadowspear’s Facebook page, or call (603) 238-9414.
