As Simon Pierpont wrote in the last edition of The Clock, the way the Spring Fling Committee choses its candidates to perform at Spring Fling is to have students vote for whoever they want to see live.
In the last edition, Simon interviewed the President of the Spring Fling Committee, Megan Driscoll, who described how the process of getting a performer to appear at Plymouth State works. Whoever wins the popular vote is then sent a proposal from the school, and if the performer can agree on the amount of money than the deal is set. If they cannot however, the next person who had the most votes is sent a proposal until someone agrees upon an amount of money to perform.
When no one who was on the list school reaches out until they can find someone who will perform for the amount they are willing to spend. This understandably upsets many students, who were hoping to see those who were options on the list they were provided perform.
Students had mixed reactions about the situation. Senior Matt Lech said, “I think its pretty bad and the Spring Fling Committee should listen to who we want and vote for. They should find a way to make it happen even if it means raising the price of tickets to make it happen.” Lech plans to not attend the concert.
Overall, most students based on their posts on social media seemed to agree with this alternative to raising the price of tickets in order to get who the student body wants to see.
This was not how every student was planning on spending his or her Spring Fling weekend however. “A few people voted for him, it doesn’t really matter,” Sophomore Steph Winter added, who plans on attending the concert.
It is important, however, that students realize that musicians, like students are often busy with their careers and scheduling performances, which makes it hard for the school to always achieve getting who the student body voted for.
Hoodie Allen is set to preform on Saturday, May 6, on the Mary Lyon lawn. Tickets for the concert go on sale May 1 through May 4, in the HUB between 10am to 2pm. Tickets will also be sold on May 5, from 10am to 5pm in the HUB Fireplace Lounge. Tickets for students are $10 and $25 for guests. Tickets will also be available at the door for students who may have forgotten, or were unable to pick up tickets on these dates.
