On Saturday, April 22, the Plymouth State Men’s Lacrosse team travelled to UMass Boston for a Little East Conference matchup. The Beacons came back from a 4-3 deficit at halftime to win the key conference game 11-7.
PSU trailed UMB 3-1 at the end of the first quarter, but outscored the hosts 3-0 in the second half to secure the lead at the halfway mark. The lone first quarter goal for Plymouth came from senior Nicco Sorrentino (Chelmsford, MA), assisted by classmate Mac Tetreault (New Durham, NH). The three Panther goals in the second quarter were netted by sophomore Chris Waterbury (Clinton, CT), junior Cam Cormier (Auburn, ME), and Sorrentino. The assists on Waterbury’s and Cormier’s goals came from Sorrentino, while Tetreault chalked up another assist on Sorrentino’s second goal of the game.
The third quarter opened with an exchange of goals between the two teams, but the UMass offense ultimately dominated the frame, outscoring PSU 6-1. Senior Alex Croatti (Brunswick, ME) claimed the Panthers’ lone goal, tossing one in at 11:26, assisted by Tetreault. The fourth quarter had the Beacons and the Panthers trading goals, each scoring two. Senior Adam Haversat (Cape Elizabeth, ME), unassisted, and Tetreault, assisted by freshman Trevor Gagnon (Pelham, NH), scored for PSU.
The Panthers were unable to rally after UMB’s explosive scoring run in the third quarter, and took the loss 11-7. PSU posts its second loss in a row, falling to 7-6 overall and 3-2 in the Little East Conference, leaving them tied for third place with the University of Southern Maine.
On Wednesday, April 26, the Panthers played their last regular season home game against LEC competitor the University of Southern Maine. PSU’s offense was on fire from the start, outscoring the Huskies 9-0 in the first half. USM rallied during the fourth quarter, five of their seven goals, but it would not be enough to take the lead. The Panthers claimed victory 13-17, bringing their record to 8-6 overall and 4-2 in the LEC. With the win, PSU is currently in a three-way tie for second place in the Little East.
The game also marked Senior Day for the Panthers, and the team honored its 11 seniors for their accomplishments: Ry an Geppert (Dover, NH), Jayson LaRiviere (Chelmsford, MA), Tyler Hawley (Jericho, VT), Mac Tetreault (New Durham, NH), Mike Morrissey (Franklin, MA), Pete Allen (Newbury, NH), Adam Haversat (Cape Elizabeth, ME), Alex Croatti (Brunswick, ME), Nico Sorrentino (Chelmsford, MA), Colin Claflin (Pembroke, MA), and Nick Bath (Kennebunkport, ME).
