M onday night, Plymouth State alum and Barstool Sports employee, Mike Grinnell, spoke in front of the Sports Management program at Hage Room in the HUB. Grinnell (’15), produces a hockey podcast called “Spittin’ Chiclets” which has become one of the top hockey podcasts in America. This has allowed him to be at the forefront of the sports and entertainment world and has given him the opportunity to meet some of the biggest names in the NHL, such as Martin St. Louis, Sean Thornton and Jack Eichel. Grinnell has also been able to meet Rob Gronkowski and his brothers, Tom Brady, and was even able to go to Super Bowl 51. Recounting his path to becoming a producer at a media outlet that is currently on the a meteoric rise in terms of popularity, Grinnell tells stories of his humble beginnings which go from a being a PSU student, to bartender, to local radio host, to running the regional website for ESPN. Grinnell went on to finish with how he came to be currently working multiple jobs at some of the most prestigious sports media outlets in New England, which include WEEI, CSN New England and of course Barstool.
“None of this matters” Grinnell said when asked to give a bit of advice. The point he was getting at was the idea that college educations and the opinions of professors shouldn’t get in the way of what students want to be doing with their lives. When asked what his advice would be to someone who wanted to get into the sports entertainment field, he said “grab a camera and make some content”.
