The first PSU Open Mic event of the semester, put on by PSU Poets and Writers, was held at Burrito Me on Tuesday, September 26. Once the first speaker began reading, everything felt like what I pictured an Open Mic night to be.
Poems were read from just after 7 pm until the last person finished their poem around 8. The poetry written by staff and students ranged in emotions: some were happy, uplifting and humorous, while others were heavy-hearted and personal.
Two of the most memorable poems were by Sam and Harvey. Sam read a poem titled “My Favorite Knock-Knock Joke” that he wrote during his senior year. The slam poem compared the emotions of being in love to telling a knock-knock joke, saying that if love were just like telling a knock-knock joke—knowing when love is about to happen—maybe it would be easier.
Harvey began her first piece by singing, and then continued on to read a poem about the water crisis happening in Flint, Michigan. The second poem Harvey read was about racism that is eveprevalent in America.
Overall, the Open Mic night was a successful event, and everyone who attended the event appeared to thoroughly enjoy it. The next Open Mic is, undoubtedly, something to look forward to. Hopefully, it will take place during cooler weather.
