Starting us off this week, Plymouth’s Cross Country team participated in the James Early Invitational, hosted by Westfield State University. The Panthers took 6th place out of a total of 37 teams, and finished first among fellow LEC opponents. Junior Sam Brunnette (Newport, VT) was the standout of the day, coming in 1st place overall, in the 8k race. Brunnette finished with a time of 25:35.03. Fellow teammates, Warren Bartlett (Loudon, N.H.) and Marcus Cryan (Topsfield, MA), were the next two Panthers to finish coming in 14th and 45th. Trinity College took first place overall in team points with Plymouth, just shy of finishing in the top 5.
The Women tied for 7th place out of 33 teams in the event. Junior Haley Dennis (Coventry, R.I.) placed 30th in the 5k, recording the 3rd fastest time in school history with a 19:43.21 finish. Senior Rileigh Goulette (Saint Albans, VT), junior Lora Giguere (Tolland, CT) and freshman Julia Labbe (Turner, Maine) all had finishes of their own that rank in the top 10 of their program’s history. Goulette came in 20:02.56, which was good for 44th place. Giguere was right behind her coming in at 47th with a 20:03.42 finish and Labbe finished 62nd with a 20:22.05 time. While tying for 7th place in team points, the Women also finished first ahead of all other LEC competition.
The Cross Country team will take place in the Emmanuel Invitational on Friday, October 13th. The event is being held at Franklin Park, in Boston. Start times are set for 4pm for the Men and 4:45pm for the Women. This will be their last competition before the LEC Championships hosted by Keene State at the end of the month.
Plymouth’s Tennis team had three games in four days this past week. The Panthers came away 2-1 from that stretch. On Wednesday, October 4th, they hosted Johnson State at Holderness School. Freshmen Chloe Knapp (Jamestown, N.Y.) and Jenna Sundquist (Monument Beach, Mass.) won 8-1 at No.3 doubles. This marks their 7th win, in as many tries when paired up. The two other Panther double pairs were able cruise to easy victories. This was the 4th time this year that the team swept the doubles portion. The singles portion was a breeze for the Panthers, as they rolled for an easy 9-0 victory on the day.
The following day, Plymouth was able to replicate their results from Wednesday, as they beat Lyndon State 9-0. Just like against Johnson State, the Panthers dominated sweeping all portions of the match, resulting in the 9-0 shutout.
On Saturday, the Panthers were on the opposite side this time, as they fell to UMass Dartmouth, 8-1. This resulted in Plymouth’s recorded dropping to 9-4 (4-3 LEC) which puts them at 5th place in the conference. Their final match is on Saturday, October 14th. The match is scheduled for a 1pm start.
