Which graduating class is the best? That will be determined this spring, in an Olympic-style event called Clash of Classes.
The participants will represent their own graduating classes, and will compete in different athletic and academic events against the other class teams. Every class team will be divided into smaller teams, so that each of the four class teams will have their own basketball teams, and obstacle course teams, among other activities. The team who wins the most categories for their class overall will be the victor. Clash of Classes is an opportunity for the seniors, juniors, sophomores, and freshmen to go head to head, to see who really is the best class.
Clash of Classes will be hosted by the junior class. It is a brand new event, that was first created by PSU student Tyler Brown. “This was based off of a high school experience that I had”, he said, “We spent two days in a gym rather than classrooms, and we’d go through events like basketball, volleyball and obstacle courses, and the winner would prevail at the end.” Tyler will be running the event with all of the class officers. The event will be a couple hours a day, for up to three days of competing.
Non-athletic students can still participate and have fun in this event. This event is meant to unite as many people as possible, and so they will accommodate for those who do not enjoy sports. “We’ll throw in a few puzzles here and there, for people who don’t have as much of a capacity for physical activity”, Tyler said. They want all students to feel like they can contribute.
If participating in the events does not sound appealing, students are encouraged to come and watch the events. “We’re hoping to have an audience, for people to cheer on their teams”, he said, “Back in high school, we went all out. People painted their faces, and wore their class colors, which we are intending to assign in this event as well.” This event will be very energetic, and will surely be entertaining to watch. Showing school spirit, as well as support for the different classes will motivate the participants.
This will be a competitive event, and so every activity will have one winning team, representing one of four class teams. “For different types of events, we will either have a point system, or a clear winner in general”, Tyler said, “Whichever class wins the most events, wins. We’re still working on distinguishing how the teams are going to get points.” A lot of thought needs to be put into an event like this, and so they are going over everything very carefully. Tyler believes that this is everyone’s chance to show who has the most school spirit. “If you want to represent your class, and make sure it comes out on top, definitely come to this event, because you have to prove it”, he said. All in all, this is an event to show appreciation for the school, and show support to the people we go to school with every day. If everything goes as planned, the event will take place this April. It is going to be held for a few hours, over the course of three days. Since campus will likely still be covered in snow and ice, the events will be held in the Courtroom, in the upper level of the HUB. If the weather permits, some events may be held in All Well North.
The process of registering for this event is up in the air as of now. Likely, registration will be online, but there may also be a booth in the HUB. Registration will likely cost five dollars.
Fundraising will take place before the event, to get as many activities as possible. “We’re looking to get some money from all of the classes, because this will be a joint, four-class event”, Tyler said. Hopefully, they get all of the funding that they need. Students are encouraged to participate, to have fun, bond with piers and class officers.
