Most Basic Halloween Costumes 2017
Most Basic Halloween Costumes 2017
We all remember last year, when the image of thousands of poorly-crafted Harley Quinn and Joker cosplays permeated our minds. So much white face makeup, so many blonde wigs with blue and red tips. So many people romanticizing the world's most toxic relationship. An overwhelming amount of teenagers got all of their DC knowledge from Suicide Squad alone, and it made the whole fan base cringe.
To my nerds out there, does anyone remember the episode of Batman: The Animated Series when Joker throws Harley out of a window? Joker is not supposed to be a smoldering Jared Leto. Their relationship is not romantic and quirky, it’s abusive and sick. That’s the whole point, that’s why we love them; because it’s ridiculous and unrealistic. I’m not trying to insult DC in any way, I love the old cartoon and Suicide Squad too. Okay, mini rant over.
We all know what took the cake for the most basic Halloween costume of 2017. This year, a new couple’s costume was wildly overdone, Georgie and Pennywise from It. Listen, we all loved the movie, and all the different quirks they gave to each of the kids. However, they are children. They are not meant to inspire adult couple’s costumes. This year, typically, boyfriends dressed as Pennywise, and girlfriends dressed as gender-bent Georgie. Can we discuss why? Pennywise is an ancient demon who takes the form of a clown, who tricks Georgie, in probably one of the most iconic scenes in film history. Pennywise tears Georgie’s arm clean off, and then eats him whole. Why did people think dressing as a dead little boy would be a cute idea? Why is this a couple’s costume? I saw couples and groups dressed as scary clowns: Pennywise, Twisty, etc. Those were amazing, and very spooky. Those costumes had nothing disturbing, such as dead children. Thinking of It, why did no one do New Kids on the Block? Only those who saw the movie will understand that one. It goes without saying that the Georgie and Pennywise costume really does not make sense, and that it should never, ever be romanticized.
Secondly, there were also lots of Ricks and Mortys. However, I’m not mad about this costume. This costume could be so overdone, and there could be hundreds, thousands, of Ricks and Mortys, and it would make perfect sense to the show. This costume is genius, because it can never be exaggerated. Every Rick and Morty is different, yet the same. Long live the show.
Lastly, there were many Purge teams. The Purge movie franchise seems stale, but a lot of people had the same idea this Halloween. People threw on raggedy clothes, and bought the iconic masks, and boom, they were Purgers. This costume could have been very interesting, if not as many people did it. It’s easy to put together, it’s spooky, and gender neutral. I wish it wasn’t basic, but it was this year. Maybe next year, it’ll be more unique, but it ranked for third in the most basic Halloween costumes of 2017.
