New Club Aims for Success

Team sports and clubs are very important to the Plymouth state community. However unlike many universities, Plymouth state now has a new official club, the Plymouth State Shooting Association (PSSA). Finally students who may be avid shooters, completely new to shooting sports and everyone in between has the opportunity to join PSSA. This is a very exciting step for the university and also for the rise of collegiate competition and recreational shooting.

For those who may only hear “shooting club” and associate it with danger, think again. Shooting sports nation wide are actually the safest activities to participate in due to highest level of safety and fundamentals learned, used and practiced every time participants are on the range. The Plymouth State Shooting Association was built off of safety and their officers and faculty advisors are all NRA certified as range safety officers, avid shooters and some with military experience.

Like all team sports with a home field, the PSSA is able to utilize the Pemigewasset Fish & Game Club (The Pemi) in Holderness as their “home range”. In return, PSSA members get a discounted membership to the Pemi where the club and its officers train new shooters on firearm safety, competition training and are able to enjoy recreational shooting as a group and where members are able to sign up and compete in a variety of shooting competitions and outings hosted at the Pemi.

To accommodate many different interests among members, the PSSA has multiple comities for members to participate with. Comities include the Recreation shooting, pistol completion, high power rifle completion, archery, trap and skeet, 3-Gun competition, female shooters and many more. Many of these competitions are held at The Pemi and other ranges around New England that PSSA team members will travel to and compete against university shooting clubs and others.

I had the pleasure to talk about PSSA with a few of the officer’s. The Team captain and currently serving in the US Marines, Bradley Rucker told me how excited he is about the group as a whole and their willingness to learn and teach each other firearm safety and mentality will give us immense opportunities to grow as a club and have fun while shooting.

Nate Sacket, a senior director who helped found the club mentioned how the initial interest from students at the student activity fair and attendance at meetings really promotes the club and gets the word out. Nate being a very experienced shooter is also excited to teach new shooters firearm safety and marksmanship. Executive director of the PSSA, James Coyne told me just how excited he is that the club is up and running and again the huge turnout from students. He mentioned that moving forward, he hopes the club will compete as much as possible in order put a foot in the door of collegiate shooting sports in hope sponsorships can be obtained. He also mentioned that the guidance of head faculty advisor Dr. Trent Boggess, a champion rifle marksmanship shooter would give students valuable education on firearm history, competition training and even reloading.

As it is still early in the school year, it seems the sky is the limit for the all-new Plymouth State Shooting Association. Through immense time in safety training for officers, new members are lucky to be taught firearm safety and different firearm platforms by a great group of like-minded individuals here at Plymouth. Like any club, the goal is to have fun and the officers assured me you will never see someone sad after shooting guns at the range.

If you would like to learn more about Plymouth State Shooting Association, do not hesitate to email the PSSA president James Coyne at

Meetings are held every Tuesday at 6pm in Hyde 213.
