On December 6th, the New Hampshire College Republicans will be hosting congressional candidate Stephen Negron. Negron (Nashua, NH) is running for the House seat that has been held by
Democratic candidate Annie Kuster. The event will be a chance for PSU students and faculty to learn about Negron’s values and views on issues like Northern Pass, foreign policy, school choice, term limits, etc. There will also be an opportunity for the audience to ask Negron. According to Jacob Shairs, the Treasurer of the New Hampshire College Republicans, the event will be used to have a “discussion to teach and learn about our values and the values that are on campus.” The club did the same thing when Congressional candidate Andy Sanborn had a discussion forum at Plymouth State on October 26th, 2017.
The Plymouth State University College Republicans is a group of conservative students dedicated to educating the PSU community about Republican values as well as get students involved in the political process. According to Shairs, they “bring a difference in opinion to the student body that we use to educate our peers. This gives our diverse student body a chance to learn about Republican values and possibly get involved in campaigns and the campaigning process.”
One of the main benefits of having Negron come to campus is opening up discussions and creating a dialogue between students who may not have the same views. “The benefit of having conservative speakers is the exact thing schooling is used for: education.” Shairs said, “If you only have one type of speaker come to campus, you can never fully understand the whole picture when it comes to domestic and foreign issues. If you only hear one side, conservative or liberal, then you will never fully understand why there is so much debate going on about these issues... The President of the Democrats and I are very good friends and she and I both agree that it is very important to have both sides of the political spectrum on campus.”
The event on the 6th will be the last held by the New Hampshire College of Republicans in the Fall semester of 2017. In the Spring of 2018, they plan on hosting more congressional candidates, as well as a trip to the Conservative Political Action Conference. CPAC is the largest political conference for college students in America. Also, alongside the Democratic Club, they are planning on hosting a debate. The debate is only in the outlining stage right now, but they are excited about the opportunity for the PSU community.
The Stephen Negron event will be held at 7:30 in the Hage Room in the HUB on December 6th. There will be pizza and drinks provided.
