Coffee, one of the many guilty pleasures of us college students. We use it daily, to keep us awake and sometimes to even function. Coffee saves the day when you are running on three hours of sleep, sick with whatever plague you caught, and there is a blizzard outside. That one sip can turn around your whole day and make you more motivated for what is yet to come. But coffee actually has other healthy uses than just keeping you up through your classes.
Coffee is the Queen of antioxidants; it cleanses your body of all the harmful stuff you put in it. Some examples include things such as junk food, smoking, alcohol, sugar and salt. Coffee battles against this stuff and kicks them out of your body. Since all those guilty pleasures lead to future body problems like cancer or high blood pressure, coffee gets rid of those toxins and it lowers your chance having those issues later in life.
Not only is coffee good for the body, it is also good for one organ in particular, the liver. If reputation perceives itself for us college students, then our livers may need some help. Medical News Today found that people who drink coffee are 20 times less likely to develop liver cirrhosis, which is a disease caused by drinking alcohol. So come Sunday morning, after a weekend full of festivities, a sip coffee will be just the pick me up your liver needs.
Coffee may help your brain stay sharp during college but it will also keep the brain on its toes even after graduation. Researchers from the University of South Florida and the University of Miami found that people past 60 who drank coffee daily developed Alzheimer’s two to four years later than people who did not drink coffee. That means that even when you are past retirement age, you still will be able to remember your first roommate's name or your first float down the Pemi River.
It can even help keep the freshman fifteen off, because coffee speeds up your metabolism. This makes it easier for your body to break down fats and sugars, which means it could lower your chances of diabetes later in life. Plus, if you skip adding the sugar and cream to your coffee, and just drink it plain, it is only seven calories.
The best benefit to coffee is the fact that it actually makes you a happier person. A study done by the National Institute of Health found that people who drink 4 cups of coffee a day are less likely to become depressed. The reason for this is because of the antioxidants that it gives you. It creates a positive boost in the body as well as in the mind.
Regardless, there are so many reasons to have a cup of coffee in the morning, but now you know the more beneficial purposes behind it. So go ahead and pour yourself a big mug of it. Or better yet, Daily Paws is open from 7:30 am to 3:00pm Monday through Friday in the Hub, right on your way to class. So maybe next time you will not just walk by. They have all different flavors of Green Mountain Coffees daily, with many options to pick from. There is a kind for everyone, and if that does not convince you, just think about all the health benefits you will get.
