Fortnite, the new video game that has all of campus going crazy. Where victories are celebrated all over snapchat and Barstool. The game has gained a lot of publicity and popularity among the millennial generation. But it seems to be occupying one gender more than the other. Fortnite has taken over the entire male population and has been distracting them from their daily lives. The game is basically a spinoff of the movie Hunger Games where players are dropped on an island and have to do what they have to in order to survive. The only way to win the game is by being the last player standing. The game is as much entertaining as it is addicting. But there is a huge dilemma surrounding this new video game, that is, it’s taking boyfriends away from their signifficant others.
The issue that is driving girlfriends crazy everywhere is that when a player dies, they can just rejoin and play another game back to back. Because this game needs a lot of concentration, players forget about their phones or who is around them. Causing boyfriends to disappear for six hours randomly. Alex Dicentes a Junior at Plymouth State says “the fact that I can not even do homework without hearing my boyfriend and all his roommates screaming at a tv or talking to each other through their headphone mics even though they are all sitting in the same room is insane.” This game has players so consumed, that their only connection to reality is through their headsets. The game is so interesting to players that they forget about their surroundings.
The other thing is that even when players are not even playing they are thinking about going home so they can. Which starts to impact scheduled plans or dates or even just quality time with their significant others. Marissa Vargas another Junior here at Plymouth State says “it is so frustrating when you just want to cuddle and hang but your boyfriend wants to go home and play Fortnite with his buddies.” Apparently, the game has caused such relationship problems that some significant others are trying to make petitions to shut the game down. All because their boyfriends would rather be playing Xbox then giving their significant others some attention.
But the thing is, Fortnite does not have to be a relationship ruiner. Clearly, there is something about the game that makes players like it. So as a significant other, maybe you should give it a shot, or just sit and watch because you might actually enjoy it. Sky Charles, a Plymouth State Junior, responds to Fortnite by saying “I personally like Fortnite, and my boyfriend and I bond over it. Sometimes it can be an inconvenience when he plays with his friends and ignores me but most of the time I enjoy playing and watching it with him.” Which is true, not all girlfriends find the game itself irritating because it actually is very fun. It is the addictiveness of the game where boyfriends start playing and before they know it has been multiple hours, where their five O’clock shadows have turned into full beards, they have lost ten pounds and ten games all while their girlfriends think they have been kidnapped. That is where the problem is. Not the game but the absence of boyfriends it creates.
So everyone, let us take a step back and evaluate the situation. Here is the advice to surviving the Fortnite bump in your relationship. All you boyfriends out there, if you find yourself to be a huge Fortnite gamer, just remember to check your phone. Just go hide in a bush and text your girl back. And girlfriends, try to be apart of it, sometimes it can be kind of funny to watch when they lose and throw their little tantrums. And to everyone, who has been fighting with loved ones over Fortnite, remember that one video game is not worth losing a relationship over.
