Tommy Wiseau’s “The Room” is the Cinematic Jewel of the 21st Century

Film is one of the most popular mediums of entertainment, media and pop culture as we know it today. Billions of dollars flow all around the world as movies have become entrenched in our lives. As a result, filmmakers have put forth their very best in churning out the very best scripts and visionary successes they've had to offer.

From the legendary “Citizen Kane” to the award-winning “Shawshank Redemption,” there are many amazing works that have stood the test of time. There is one, however, that outworks them all. It features an astonishing script, intriguing director choices and one of the greatest leading male performances in history. I don't need to say the name of the movie, I'm sure. But, we all know that it's “The Room.”

This film is not to be confused with the film “Room,” released in 2015, that apparently got a little attention. No, I refer to the masterpiece released back in the golden year of 2003. “The Room” is directed, written by and stars Tommy Wiseau, who also independently funded the movie itself.

A visionary of our time, Wiseau manages to blend a tragic love story, on par with “The Notebook,” with themes of friendship, betrayal and even fatherhood. Who can forget such classic lines such as, “You are tearing me apart Lisa!” and, of course, “I did not hit her; it's bulls**t! It's not true! I did not hit her, I did nooot. Oh, hi, Mark!”

Some who would choose to downplay this masterpiece out of sheer jealousy could try and point out low reviews and ratings that the film received. Even more foolishly, they would attempt to point out the movies less than $2,000 dollar box office. The fact of the matter is, movies are not made to be paid for and reviewed by so called “professionals.” Movies are made to be enjoyed by the masses for their brilliance and innovation.

Does it matter if we understand Denny’s creepy relationship with Johnny and Lisa? Surely not. Is it confusing how Mark says he is friends with Johnny in one scene, but sleeps with Johnny’s girlfriend in the next? Not if you pay attention. Do we need to have a follow up to the line about a character developing breast cancer? If it was important, then it would have been answered in the movie.

“The Room” does what no other film has yet to do. It has, as such, earned “The Crock’s” award for Cinematic Jewel of the Century. Being more emotional than “Titanic,” more action packed than “The Avengers” and more visually stunning than “Avatar,” I dare you to find a film that does anything better.
